Where does Polish Pottery come from?

This is a question many customers ask. Boleslawiec is a town in the western part of Poland, in Lower Silesia. Bunzlau has about 40,000 inhabitants. Bolesławiec is the Polish name, while Bunzlau is the German and Bunzel is the Silesian name for the town. Polish pottery has made the town famous for a long time. Polish pottery had significant economic importance until the mid-20th century, and the Bunzlau style was very popular. Not only in Germany but also in Scandinavia, England, the Netherlands, and many other countries, Polish pottery was used. Until the mid-20th century, Polish pottery was even exported overseas due to its popularity.

What is Polish Pottery? What makes Polish Pottery special?

Polish pottery is and has always been known for its resistance to temperature changes and its heat resistance. Another positive feature was that Polish pottery didn’t show hairline cracks. Of course, these two properties have lost some significance today due to the development of new, highly modern pots, dishware, etc. However, this was not the case in the past. Storage vessels made from Polish pottery were very popular in earlier times as well. Storage posed different challenges to people in the past than it does today. Polish pottery was used for tableware, cooking, and baking utensils. These included cooking pots, bowls, baking pans, tableware, and much more. Still widely known and popular are the large mugs, also called Tippel, or the small, handleless pots, known as Krausen, often used for jam and honey. Bowls with or without lids and flower vases are also very popular.
